Several federal and provincial programs provide Alberta low income dental coverage for eligible residents. Each program has its own eligibility requirements, covered services, limits, and approval rules, so confirming your current benefits is important before treatment begins.

Canadian Dental Care Plan
The Canadian Dental Care Plan, or CDCP, helps eligible Canadian residents pay for a portion of qualifying oral-health services.
Applications are currently open for the 2026–2027 benefit year, which runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.
To qualify, an applicant must meet all four federal requirements:
- Have no access to private dental insurance or coverage
- File the required Canadian income tax return
- Have an adjusted family net income below $90,000
- Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
Access to private dental coverage can affect eligibility even when someone chooses not to enrol in an available plan. Eligibility and coverage dates are determined by the federal program, not by our office.
Before booking care under the CDCP, confirm that your coverage is active and that the appointment falls on or after your official coverage start date. The federal government advises members not to receive treatment before that start date.

Does the CDCP Cover the Entire Dental Bill?
Not necessarily.
The CDCP pays a percentage of eligible services using fees established by the program:
- Below $70,000 adjusted family net income: up to 100% of eligible costs at CDCP-established fees
- $70,000 to $79,999: up to 60%
- $80,000 to $89,999: up to 40%
Even when the CDCP covers 100% of its established fee, an additional patient cost may remain. This can happen when:
- Our fee is higher than the CDCP-established amount
- A service is only partly covered
- A service is excluded
- Preauthorization is required
- A co-payment applies
- Coverage is inactive on the treatment date
The federal government recommends asking about costs that will not be covered before receiving care.
We can explain our treatment estimate, process direct billing where available, and clarify any patient portion known at the time. The final reimbursement decision remains with the benefit administrator.
Alberta Adult Health Benefit
The Alberta Adult Health Benefit may provide dental benefits for qualifying low-income Albertans.
Eligible services can include preventive care such as examinations, X-rays, and cleanings, along with basic treatment such as fillings, extractions, and dentures. The program recommends confirming what it will pay for with the healthcare provider.
Eligibility and benefit decisions are managed by the Government of Alberta. We cannot approve an application, but we can help explain recommended treatment and prepare the information needed for billing.
Alberta Child Health Benefit
The Alberta Child Health Benefit helps qualifying low-income households access health benefits for their children.
Some families receiving this benefit may also qualify for the CDCP. When a service is eligible under both programs, the CDCP claim is submitted first, and the Alberta benefit may then consider the remaining eligible amount.
Families should confirm that both benefits are active and bring all current coverage information to the appointment.
Dental Assistance for Alberta Seniors
Eligible seniors with low or moderate incomes may qualify for Alberta’s Dental and Optical Assistance for Seniors program.
Eligibility is income-based and is determined using income reported to the Canada Revenue Agency. Covered services and available assistance remain subject to the program’s rules and benefit period.
Alberta’s general health insurance does not function as routine dental coverage. It covers only limited dental, oral, and maxillofacial surgical services, with separate assistance programs available for eligible groups.
Which Coverage Option Should You Check First?
Your starting point depends on your circumstances.
You have no access to private dental coverage
Review the current CDCP requirements. Your income, tax filing, residency, and access to other dental coverage will determine whether you qualify.
You have a low household income
Check whether the Alberta Adult Health Benefit or Alberta Child Health Benefit applies to your household.
You receive AISH
AISH includes basic dental benefits such as examinations, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, extractions, and dentures, along with other services subject to program rules.
You are an Alberta senior
Review the eligibility requirements for Dental and Optical Assistance for Seniors.

Have CDCP or Alberta Dental Benefits?

Can CDCP and Alberta Benefits Work Together?
Some patients may hold both CDCP coverage and an Alberta public dental benefit.
When coordination is permitted, the CDCP is generally processed first. The Alberta program may then consider a remaining eligible amount under its own fee schedule and coverage rules.
Two active benefits do not guarantee that every cost will be paid. A balance may remain because the programs can apply different:
